Meeting Rangi Matamua he signed a childrens book I purchased from him
"To Phoenix & Zeal Follow the stars"
These words have been on my mind while working on a design for Matariki lately.
The three elements on this whakakai are as follows
Maunga: The Mountain triangles at the bottom signal whenua and grounding as people, Basically you or I of the land
Poutama: Translating to stairway to heaven, we have put this pattern in to signify ascension/aspiration and an elevation of oneself
Matariki cluster: Observed as guidance/reflection for ourselves and whanau the Matariki cluster has traditionally been an important time of year for Maori.
Together this piece means for the wearer to follow their dreams and be guided by the stars in the heavens. So to you we say
FOLLOW THE STARS!
Designed and made in Tauranga with inspiration from Dr Rangi one Naomi Biddle of whakatane fame and Mary Chan from Fairy Springs who asked us to make earrings of this shape (trapezoid?) three years ago!
Colours: Wood, Green, Black, Gold, Purple
Measurement: 6cm approx from hook to bottom

The materials used and sourced for our contemporary designs are as follows:
Lining: Black polycotton blend
Feathers: Our contemporary korowai designs include a variety of colored craft feathers for fashion industry clothing and costumes, particularly hen and rooster coque feathers.
Bands: Our contemporary korowai designs include machine made taniko bands made locally in Aotearoa, New Zealand.
