Whenua Brown celebrates our connection to Papatūānuku and the land that holds and nurtures us. Part of our Te Hono design story, its warm earthy colours speak to belonging, our roots and the connections we carry with us.

Handcrafted by our whānau in our West Auckland studio, this contemporary children's korowai brings together rich brown, black and white feathers with our exclusive KBH Signature Tāniko Band.

Created for life's special moments, from welcoming a new pēpi to birthdays, kapa haka and whānau celebrations, it is a meaningful gift for tamariki and mokopuna, and a keepsake to treasure as they grow.

    Materials

Each of our contemporary kākahu is individually handcrafted in our West Auckland studio using carefully selected materials.

Our designs feature a combination of quality feathers, woven tāniko bands, fabric linings and finishing materials. Feather types, colours, textures and design details vary depending on the collection and individual piece.

We use both locally sourced and imported materials, with each piece thoughtfully assembled and finished by our whānau team here in Aotearoa, New Zealand.

As every piece is individually made, slight variations in feather placement, texture and colour are a natural part of our handcrafted process.

    Dimensions

    Size & Dimensions

Our contemporary kākahu are available in a range of sizes and lengths for adults and tamariki. Whether you're looking for a shorter cape or a full-length design, our guide will help you choose the right fit.

    Understanding Our Measurements

Width: Our sizes are determined by the length of the tāniko band, measured from one end to the other when laid flat.

Length: The finished length is measured from the top of the tāniko band to the bottom of the fabric lining. Feathers naturally extend approximately 5–10 cm beyond the lining, adding to the overall length.

How each kākahu falls will vary depending on the wearer's height and chosen size.

    Adult Size Guide

    Size Tāniko Band Width
    Small (S) 95-105 cm
    Medium (M) 105-115 cm
    Large (L) 115-125 cm
    Extra Large (XL) 125-135 cm
    2XL 135-145 cm
    3XL 145-155 cm

    Tamariki Size Guide

    Size Tāniko Band Width
    Baby 40 cm
    Toddler 60 cm
    Kids

    80 cm

As each piece is individually handcrafted, slight variations in finished measurements may occur.

    Care Instructions

    Care Instructions

Each Korowai by Hiria piece is thoughtfully handcrafted and deserves to be treated with care.

    Handling & Wearing

Handle your piece gently, particularly around feathers, tāniko and decorative details. Avoid excessive pulling, rubbing or contact with sharp objects that may damage delicate materials.

    Natural Feather Shedding

A small amount of feather shedding is completely normal and expected over time. It is not unusual for approximately 2–5 feathers to come loose when your kākahu is being handled or worn, even with careful use.

This is a natural characteristic of feathered garments and does not necessarily indicate a fault in craftsmanship.

    Cleaning

We recommend avoiding machine washing, tumble drying, soaking or harsh cleaning products. For minor marks, gently spot-clean suitable fabric surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid wetting feathers, tāniko or decorative elements.

For more significant cleaning requirements, please contact our team for advice before attempting to clean your piece.

    Storage

Store your piece in a cool, dry environment away from direct sunlight, moisture and excessive heat. For feathered kākahu, ensure feathers are not compressed or folded for extended periods. We recommend storing in a garment bag in between use.

    Display

If displaying your piece, choose a dry location away from direct sunlight to help preserve its colours, materials and overall appearance.

With thoughtful care, your piece can continue to be worn, displayed and treasured for generations to come.
