What is a Korowai?
A korowai is a traditional woven Māori cloak, often adorned with feathers or tassels 's worn as a mantle of prestige and honor, symbolizing leadership and a responsibility to care for people and the environment. While "korowai" specifically refers to a type of Māori cloak with tassels, it's also become a broader term for Māori cloaks in general.
What are other names that people use instead of Korowai?
While many still choose to use Korowai as a broader term for contemporary Korowai, there are also Kākahu, which means clothes/clothing, and Kahu, which is Cape or Cloak. Kahu Huruhuru, meaning feathered cloak is another common term for contemporary Korowai.
Do you have any in available and in stock?
We operate on a made-to-order basis for our contemporary korowai designs. Our standard production timeline is 15+ business days from receipt of order.
Where are you located?
Our Auckland-based, home-studio is where we meticulously handcraft each order. Please note that appointments are required for visits.
Can I travel overseas with my contemporary Korowai design?
Don't worry! As a contemporary Korowai, it's considered a feathered cloak and can be packed in your luggage for international travel.
What sizes do you make?
Our sizes range from baby's, toddler, kids and teenage. Our adult range has 3 lengths, quarter, half and full length with the option to widen and lengthen to suit.
What feathers do you use?
Primarily (coloured) Hen and Rooster Coque Feathers. We can also find other local and imported feathers for custom designs on a case by case basis.
What events would you see, wear or gift a Korowai?
Korowai are commonly worn at Birthdays, Weddings, Graduations, Funerals, Family photo's, and when getting Māori Moko (tattoo).

The Korowai signifies prestige, honor, and leadership. It carries the responsibility of caring for both people and the environment.
Do you create custom designs?
Yes! We offer up to 12 colors in 4 different styles in 3 lengths. However, we can create a custom design to suit your family needs.
Do you create handwoven designs?
Yes! We would suggest a one on one custom consultation to discuss information like: timeframe, design, materials and budget.
